Résumé scientifique du projet MigraChiCovid / “法国华人应对新冠疫情”研究项目 / Scientific Summary of the MigraChiCovid Research Project

(1) études des pratiques professionnelles et des rôles de professionnels de santé et de chercheurs en médecine et en biologie d’origine chinoise en France face au Covid-19 (Volet MEDIC) ;

(2) analyses des vécus de discrimination et de racisme anti-asiatique liés au Covid-19 et des luttes contre ces traitements différenciés (Volet DISCRI) ;

(1)研究在法华语华裔医护人员以及健康/医学领域科技工作者如何参与抗击新冠疫情;

(2)分析与新冠疫情相连的社会歧视和反亚洲种族主义,关注中国及亚裔群体受歧视经历以及他们的反歧视抗争;

The MigraChiCovid Research Project (“Chinese migration in France facing the Covid-19 pandemic: the emergence of new forms of solidarity in times of crisis”) is funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR).

This project aims to study the social representations, perceptions, attitudes and behaviours of Chinese people in France related to the Covid-19 pandemic. On the one hand, some Chinese migrants and French born Chinese - among them medical experts, journalists, association leaders, researchers - have been actively involved in the organisation of care, the supply of medical equipment as well as in information sharing and the dissemination of expert knowledge since January 2020. On the other hand, some individuals have been experiencing discrimination and anti-Asian racism linked to the Covid-19 pandemic, which was first detected in China. Thus, we document these two co-existing realities: national and transnational solidarity dynamics to improve the control of the disease, to which the Chinese living in France contribute, on one side; discrimination, racism, stigmatization and exclusion against them and their struggles to counter these injustices on the other.

Our research covers three Work Packages (WPs):

(1) analysis of professional practices carried out by health workers and medical researchers of Chinese origin in France during the  Covid-19 pandemic (WP “MEDIC”);

(2) analysis of the experiences of discrimination and anti-Asian racism related to the Covid-19 pandemic among Chinese migrants and their children and mobilizations against these differential treatments (WP “DISCRI”);

(3) analysis of the changes in the relations of Chinese migrants and their descendants with China and their transnational civic responsibilities in the fight against the coronavirus (WP “TRANSNA”).

This research is based on quantitative and qualitative data (interviews, participant observations, online and offline ethnographies, questionnaire, and media monitoring). We question the emergence of new forms of solidarity on a national and transnational scale, involving Chinese migrants and their descendants in the context of the global health crisis.
